Phonics
At St Paul's Catholic Primary School we use the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) Phonics Scheme.
ELS was created to ensure every child can read well, quickly.
The principles of ELS are based upon:
• the delivery of whole-class, high-quality first teaching with well-structured daily lesson plans
• the use of consistent terminology by teachers, children and parents
• the use of consistent resources that support effective teaching
• repetition and reinforcement of learning
• regular and manageable assessment to ensure that all children ‘keep up’ rather
than ‘catch up’
• the ‘E’ model.
Starting from their second week in Reception, pupils will have daily phonics lessons where they will work through the ELS scheme. There are workbooks where children will consolidate the phonemes they have learnt that day, and also practice their handwriting and harder to read and spell words (HRSW).
When children are ready they will start taking reading and blending books home. Parent's should ensure children are read with on a daily basis at home, this helps children to consolidate learning from school and develop fluency.
